"Poor old Sweep! He was so young. He was so bright - and he owed me ten pence!"
Matthew

Accidents is an episode of The Sooty Show. It is also known as Safety First. It was released in 1981.

Plot[]

Sooty, Sweep and Soo are fast asleep, safe and sound in their beds, however they awake to hear screams from Matthew, who has stepped out of bed and fallen over a toy car, hurting his ankle. Matthew goes to complain to Sooty, Sweep and Soo about leaving their toys lying around, but they think it's funny. Matthew soon stops them laughing when he mentions not taking them on the picnic he'd promised. He tells them that they should be more careful. However when Matthew leaves the bedroom he has yet another accident, this time sliding on a roller skate and hurting his wrist. They all go to get washed for the picnic in the bathroom, with Sweep eager to have a bath. However Sooty stops him just in time before he leaps into a scolding hot bath, although Matthew had got into his bath before checking the temperature and scolding his feet.

Down at the breakfast bar, the gang peel their boiled eggs for the picnic, learning the dangers of hot saucepans. Matthew also tells Sooty off for rocking on his chair and when Sooty asks him why he can't, Matthew demonstrates by rocking on his stool and falling backwards on his own and banging his head. While preparing to take some bread, Sooty then hands Matthew a knife, which cuts his finger. After Soo brings in a sliced loaf, Sweep suggests they take toast to the picnic. Matthew explains Sooty and Sweep not to touch electrical equipment, but then Sweep puts his paw in the toaster to check if the toast was alright, leading to Matthew again having to tell them not to touch electrical equipment while banging on the toaster, causing it to blow up.

The gang decide to go and play in their bedroom, but Matthew isn't pleased that they are playing with sharp toy swords and tells Soo off for bouncing on a bed. However once again it's Matthew who ends up having an accident banging his eye when leaving the bedroom.

Finally the gang are their picnic, where Sooty and Sweep are playing with a ball. The ball later ends up bouncing onto a road, where Sweep chases after it and is nearly run over. Matthew tells Sweep that he must never run out onto a road. However Matthew is then run over by the Vicar on his bicycle. Back home Matthew reads the gang a story highlighting the dangers of playing in the sea, when at the Seaside.
