The Big Day Out is a direct-to-DVD special released in 2009, five years after the latest series ended. It is the start of the new Sooty series. This DVD was re-released in 2013 for Poundland stores.

Plot

Richard is taking Sooty, Sweep, and Soo to the seaside, but in true Sooty Show style - nothing goes to plan.

Synopsis

Sooty, Sweep, Soo and Richard are travelling in their van to go on holiday, and are excited about the talent contest that's happening later on in the day. As they get along the way, the van breaks down and Richard wonders if the engine has ran out of oil. Richard tries to call the roadside assistants on Sooty's behalf, but it ends up the "roadside assistants" are just Sooty and Sweep, who the former ends up causing a menace for Richard by using up all the oil to squirt him and Sweep. However, Sooty's magic wand saves the van and cleans up both Richard and Sweep.

Eventually, they arrive at their destination and everyone is excited for a particular thing - Richard is excited about the Talent Show, Soo is excited about the funfair, Sweep is excited about the sausage van, and Sooty is excited to go to the drinks machine. Richard however is prepared with cans of pop and some dog biscuits (that Sweep snook in) and decides to drink one, which sprays all over him. Everybody then notices that Sooty has vanished, and so they all attempt to find him ("Hey, Where is Sooty?").

When they reach the funfair, the gang have still not found Sooty, and decide to ask a security man to see where he could have gone. However, the man cannot recognize Sweep's squeaks, so Soo instead asks where Sooty was, but he is a bit concerned about who he looks like and thinks the gang are "having a laugh". Richard then tells him, until Sooty (hiding in Richard's bag) burps due to the fizzy pop, to which the security man thinks Richard burped, and reveals his name to be Bob. Bob then finds out that it's coming from Richard's bag, which he looks into only to be sprayed by the pop. Sooty reveals himself and gets clicked in by Bob, and notices something surprising, but the gang thinks they're in deep trouble, so they all take off.

Sooty, Sweep and Soo find themselves near the roller coaster, which Soo wants to ride on. She notices she is way too small for the coaster, so Sooty uses his wand to make Soo, Sweep, and himself taller, completely confusing the ride attendant. When they get on the coaster, Sweep feels hungry for ice cream, and so the gang go and get ice cream while returning to the roller coaster. Meanwhile, Richard has escaped Bob and notices the puppets on the roller coaster, so he decides to do some puzzles to pass the time. However, that doesn't last long when the speed of the coaster causes all the ice cream to go on Richard, which the puppets don't even notice until Richard reveals himself, covered in ice cream. Sooty, Sweep and Soo decide to go to the Doughnut stall, so they head off there, while Richard plans to get cleaned up, accidentally flicking ice cream at Bob, who notices him and chases him round the park again.

Meanwhile, Mo is having trouble at her Doughnut store, and is happy to see her old friends Sooty, Sweep and Soo. Mo tells the puppets that she is overworked and asks them to come by later. Sweep decides to want to have chips instead, so Soo goes off to get some. Sooty and Sweep then tell Mo that they want to help her make doughnuts. However, it proves to be quite a chore and the two puppets begin fighting and getting themselves dirty, causing a terrible mess. Mo is unsure what to do, but Sooty knows what to do - use his wand. With the words of "Izzy Wizzy, Let's Get Busy", the doughnuts are all completed in no-time.

Bob continues to chase Richard around the park, to which he goes on the Ghost Train to hide out Bob, who refuses to go on due to be "afraid of ghosts". When a flour-covered Sweep comes to him, he doesn't see that Sweep is covered in flour and thinks he is a real ghost, running off and saving Richard in the process. Eventually, Sooty and Soo return and the next thing was to continue enjoying the theme park at their best. ("Let's Have Fun with Sooty!")

After their theme park fun, the crew reach the beach, but Sweep has gone missing, to which they find him in the sand - head first. After retrieving him, he tells them that he might have bounced too hard. Richard then reveals that he has brought them some buckets and spades to make sandcastles. Sooty, Sweep and Soo decide to pit themselves against Richard to come with the best Sandcastle. While the puppets use their buckets and spades, Richard attempts to use wheelbarrows to poor results, with his small simple castle being dwarfed against the large victorian-style castle made by the puppets, complete with a water-squirting cannon.

Richard is sour that he lost the competition, and even more after he got squirted like he always does. Sooty sets up his deck chair, but after Soo suggests some "change", Sooty changes the position of the chair to various humiliating ways, and eventually he falls down entirely. Near the end of the day, as Sooty and Sweep play with a ball (and keep bonking Richard along the way), Soo asks Richard what he is going to do in the talent show, and he doesn't know, while Soo is excited for the entire event to show herself off. After being bonked on the head a few more times, he takes away the ball and throws it away, bonking Bob the Security Guard, who is having a drink of milkshake. After Richard notices he bonked Bob again, he tries to make himself and the puppets look standard, but it fails to work when Bob asks Richard if the ball was his. Sooty spoils it for him, and Bob begins to chase Richard once again. The puppets decide to go exploring again, and Sooty knows where to go next - the Animal Farm. ("You Magic Sooty"), where Sooty sees a caged Butch, and Sweep thinks a rabbit is a monkey.

The main event has arrived - the Talent Show. Richard is dressed up in a white costume, managing to escape Bob again. The puppets return, and get ready for the event. Sooty tells Richard if he is disguised to make sure Bob doesn't recognise him, to Richard's confusion - until he realises the "Bob" he whispered about is the Security Guard.

Mr. Dickie Blazer introduces the show, and introduces the three judges - Kipper the Cat, Butch the Bulldog, and Ramsbottom the Snake. Dickie Blazer reveals that the winners will gain amazing prizes, while the losers will get pied in the face. He introduces the first contestant - Richard as Elvis Presley. However, his act proves to be terrible when Sooty magics his voice to sound far higher than it does. He runs off immediately after Bob notices him and chases him away, while the judges are not amused. The next contestant is Soo, who showcases her tap-dancing skills. While Kipper isn't thrilled, both Butch and Ramsbottom are impressed. The next contestant is Sweep as Lady Gaga, squeaking away to a cover of "Bad Romance", getting the crowd and even Richard moving.

However, Richard's dancing catches him next to Bob, and he stops the performance to tell everyone watching that he's been after Richard and the puppets all day, booing the crowd. However he reveals the reason why: Sooty is Brean Leisure Park's one-millionth customer - surprising the crew, who all this time thought that Bob was angry at them. The puppets win a holiday for four at Brean, while Richard gets a pie in the face for his terrible performance. Dickie Blazer then showcases the final performance of the day - Sooty's Band, as they sing a song about how happy they are together ("We are Family, Everybody Sing with Sooty!"). Dickie Blazer is impressed, and all three judges agree as well and Dickie Blazer decides that the Sooty Band are the winners of the Who's Got Talent competition. With this, Dickie Blazer leads everyone into a dance party as the special ends.

Goofs

  • During the scene where Sooty and Sweep are honking each others' noses in the van, the end of Sooty's puppet can be seen frequently. Also, in the same scene, the puppets are talking to Richard out of the passenger window, but when they cut to a shot of the van smoking, the puppets are looking out of the windscreen.

  • Whilst Sweep is talking to the dog, the puppeteer's arm can be seen. The camera then quickly adjusts to Sweep's position.
  • When Sweep is being shown on the roller coaster, the costumer next to him, actually puppeteer Brian Sandford, looks directly down at the camera and nods suggesting that he was signalling for something.
  • While the puppets were bouncing on the trampoline, black thread is visible.
  • When Sooty waves his magic wand in Mo's doughnut stall, the puppeteer's head is visible.
